Board Fellows places Net Impact members on nonprofit's & sustainable business' boards for 6- to 12-month fellowships. As a Board Fellow, you will:

• Gain tangible board-level management and governance experience

• Develop working relationships with board members in sustainable efforts

• Strengthen ties to the local community

• Put Net Impact ideals into action

The program brings valuable business skills to the organizations, while exposing Net Impact members to board-level management and governance issues. In addition to regular board responsibilities, many fellows also work on strategic projects determined in consultation with the Executive Director and Board Mentor. Board Fellows are expected to commit 10+ hours per month for six to twelve months, attend all Board meetings, and deliver the agreed-upon results & deliverables by the end of the project.

Shakti Rising

Shakti Rising is a social change organization transforming the lives of women, girls, and the larger community. Our mission is to empower young women to uncover, rediscover, and reclaim their whole selves. We cultivate the health and emerging leadership of women and girls, ultimately empowering them to utilize their personal transformation as a catalyst for positive change in their families and communities.

The work of Net Impact Board Fellows would be to advise, consult and construct a 3-5 year business plan for a garden-based business endeavor.The Shakti Garden Project is a tangible representation of Shakti’s mission and values. Apprentices in the Transformational Recovery Programuse the garden as part of their personal healing work; Education & Community Wellness students learn holistic herbal and health practices; and volunteers and community leaders share in supporting and growing the garden.  The Garden vision is to contribute to the sustainability of Shakti through creation of a social enterprise; an herb-based business using the garden to provide jobs for the women we serve, and generating sustainable income through product development.

GAIO

GAIO helps bridge the world through communication & education. We are committed to literacy & education in Africa and our first project is to finish building a modern Library & Cultural Center to improve the lives and futures of the children of Akwatia, Ghana. Together with the Regional Chief of Akwatia, we are facilitating the construction of a Library & Cultural Center for the 20,000 children in the region as well as the 35,000 adults who need to improve their literacy and job skills. We are committed to using renewable, local resources and energy systems and incorporating eco-friendly building practices.

The Board Fellows project’s goal is to enhance GAIO’s marketing efforts as well as aid in fundraising initiatives including an event and grant writing. GAIO is in partnership with UCSD and will obtain Engineering Designs on the sustainability aspects for the Library in December 2010.  (The walls are up on the building already.)  Between now and December we will prepare marketing materials for presentation to potential sponsors.  Also, there is a need to update all current materials to reflect the new collaborations etc. and send our press releases.

Under perfectly blue San Diego skies -- on a day that was warm enough, but not too hot -- tires, a mattress frame, a basketball, an entire roof of someone's house, beer cans, and other trash were removed. All had a good time, received free metal water bottles, snacked on cookies and fruit, and left with interesting stories.

Volunteers will receive commemorative event reusable water bottles (while supplies last), allowing participants to incorporate a sustainable habit into your daily life. Beverage bottles and other plastics are some of the most common types of trash that you will find while cleaning up litter at this event. These eco-friendly alternatives will prevent litter, reduce waste, and cut down our dependence on plastics.

  • SITE: South Park - Juniper Canyon
  • MEETING POINT: Laurel Street and Felton Street, San Diego 92104

  • PLEASE BRING: Please bring a completed waiver form that can be found on the Creek to Bay website. It helps to speed up the check in process if volunteers have their completed waiver in hand when they arrive. Volunteers may want to bring extra water or snacks, and should wear sturdy closed toed shoes and clothing appropriate for a cleanup. Hats and sunscreen are also recommended.
